Who Will Benefit from the Enforcement Law?
Director Emrah Serbes will benefit from the execution law. It was determined that the crime committed by Serbes caused the death of more than one person in installments. So it’s not covered by the exception. Emrah Serbes was on trial for allegedly causing the death of 3 people from a family by hitting their car from behind on the Izmir-Aydın highway. Emrah Serbes was sentenced to 13 years and 4 months in prison for ‘causing the death of 3 people with savings’. Supreme Court upheld the sentence of the local court.
The mining disaster in the Soma district of Manisa, in which 301 workers lost their lives, had also been bothering Turkey for years. The lawsuit related to the disaster was concluded in July 2018. Punishment given by the local court to the defendants for “Causing the death and injury of more than one person by taxi” was deemed appropriate by the Izmir Regional Court of Justice. Can Gürkan, the chairman of the board of directors of the mining company, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the local court, was released after an appeal review. In the case, 4 detained defendants, including the general manager of the mining company and the business manager, were sentenced to 18 years Dec 9 months and 22 years 6 months in prison. These defendants, who are still under arrest, will also benefit from the execution law.
