Applications for the exercise of this right are made personally or by private power of attorney to the governor’s office where the place of settlement is located. Applications made by mail are not accepted.
Citizenship applications of persons who are minors or do not have the power to distinguish are made by their parents or guardians.
The foreign identity number is taken as the basis for applications and transactions.
As the date of application, the date on which the sample of the petition is registered by the person’s application authority is taken as the basis.
A foreigner who wants to acquire Turkish citizenship can stay outside Turkey for a total of six months during the requested residence period. The total period not exceeding six months spent outside Turkey shall be counted within the prescribed period of residence.
If a foreigner stays outside Turkey for a total of more than six months during the residence period, or stays in Turkey for more than six months without a valid residence permit or without obtaining a residence permit, the residence period is terminated and the residence periods before this date are not taken into account.
Those who do not intend to settle in Turkey without a legal residence permit or despite being legal; Applying for asylum or asylum, requesting asylum, children for educational, tourist, escort and treatment purposes, or residing in Turkey with a residence permit obtained for purposes such as a foreign mission staff ID card, which provides immunity with diplomatic or consular privileges, is not considered valid residence when acquiring Turkish citizenship.
If a person who is in Turkey due to residence reasons that are not accepted when acquiring Turkish citizenship later settles in Turkey for a reason that is considered valid, their previous residence period will also be taken into account. This provision does not apply to those who are in Turkey with a residence permit for tourist purposes.
The approval of official documents issued by foreign authorities is carried out in accordance with Article 167 of the Regulation on the Implementation of the Population Services Law.
For foreigners who want to acquire Turkish citizenship, it is sufficient that the documents such as diplomas and passports submitted by foreign authorities during the application are translated into Turkish and notarized.
If deemed necessary, the approval of the original residence permits can also be made by the provincial directorates.
