What Are National Holidays And Public Holidays

One of the receivable lawsuits between the employee and the employer in the labor courts arises from the non-payment of wages for the work performed on National Holidays and General Holidays. However, in order to calculate these claims, it is first necessary to determine which days are national holidays and general holidays.

Although Labor Law No. 4857 does not contain a provision on national holidays and general holidays, this issue is regulated in the Law No. 2429 on National Holidays and General Holidays. According to Article 1 of  Law, only national holiday is Republic Day on October 29.

According to Article 2 of the same law, general holidays are;

Public holidays;
April 23 is National Sovereignty and Children’s Day.

May 19 is the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day.

August 30 is Victory Day.

Religious holidays;
Eid al-fitr; from 13.00 on the eve of 3.5 days,

Eid al-Adha is 4.5 days from 13.00 on the eve.

January 1 is a New Year’s holiday,
May 1st is the Day of Labor and Solidarity,
July 15 was designated as a general holiday as Democracy and National Unity Day.
