What Is a Name Addition Request, and What Kind of Request Is It?

Cases involving the addition, change, or correction of a name are common in practice. Individuals may not be called by the names given to them by their parents, may not be recognized by those names, or may be known by an additional name. In such cases, it is necessary to address the issue of adding a name. For example, if a person named Ahmet is known as Ahmet Hasan among friends, at work, or in school, the person must file a lawsuit to have the name added.

The purpose of this lawsuit is for the petitioners to file a name addition lawsuit that includes these requests. The most important element regarding name changes or the addition of a new name is the concept of proof. In the lawsuit to be filed, the court requires the existence and proof of a valid reason for the addition of the name.

The grounds that may be accepted as valid reasons for a valid lawsuit are specified in our legal regulations, and various precedents have been established through Supreme Court decisions. However, the valid reasons outlined in the legislation and precedents are not exhaustive. The judge evaluates whether the plaintiff has presented a valid reason for adding a name in the specific case.

An individual may request the addition of a meaningful name that does not conflict with traditional customs. The name to be added must be in accordance with the Turkish alphabet.
